Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
Powerful art collection
The oldest continually operating public museum in the US began with just 79 objects and now features a robust collection of over 50,000 inside its castle-esque building.
Special highlights include a collection of Hudson River School landscapes, but European and contemporary works are well represented.
What’s on view rotates and holdings include works by Gentileschi, Caravaggio, Fra Angelico, Hals, Renoir, Manet, Picasso, Pollock, Rothko, Sherman, Mondrian, Warhol, O’Keefe, Mapplethorpe, and Gonzalez-Torres.
