Mezcal & Pulque Bars

mezcaleria

Mezcal and pulque are all the rage these days, as evidenced by the growing number of bars specializing in the alcoholic agave drinks.

Pulque, a viscous pre-Hispanic beverage made from fermented agave, is poured in pulquerías and often comes in flavors such as pine nut and pineapple.

Mezcal, on the other hand, is a distilled spirit similar to tequila but usually smokier and more potent with an average alcohol content between 45% to 50%.

Served in mezcal bars known as mezcalerías, it is sometimes accompanied with orange slices and sal de gusano (salt with ground up agave worms).
