History

"El cabo D. Pedro Mur arrebata el estandarte de la caballería marroquí"

First settled by the Muslims in the ninth-century, "Mayrit" (the place of the water channel or spring) was initially little more than a defensive outpost against Christians.

It was only when Felipe II chose it as the permanent imperial capital in 1561 that it really emerged. With the arrival of the royal court Madrid's population began to swell and its development has continued almost unchecked ever since.
