Hiroshima 広島
Cosmopolitan city with tragic past
Hiroshima needs little introduction - when the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945, it obliterated nearly everything within a 2km radius in Western Honshū’s main city.
The Peace Memorial Park (Heiwa Kinen Kōen), with its world heritage-listed A-bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Museum, is a must-visit.
Don’t miss the Paper Cranes and Children's Peace Monument - the story about why 10 million cranes are sent from around Japan and the world each year is both sobering and heart-warming.
Hiroshima’s bustling downtown area includes the popular pedestrian arcade, Hon-dori.
Make sure to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, the local version of this popular dish.
Hiroshima has Japan's largest tram network with eight tram lines connecting Hiroshima Station with most of the city's attractions.
Tram line 2 goes as far as Miyajima-guchi, from where ferries depart to Miyajima. Visiting Miyajima as a day trip from Hiroshima is a good option.
