Yokohama 横浜
Cosmopolitan port city
While Yokohama is officially Japan's 2nd largest city with over 3 million people, it’s only 30 minutes from Tōkyō by train, and with Kawasaki in-between, it will feel like it’s all part of the same massive Kantō metropolis.
One of the first places in Japan to be opened to foreign trade in 1859, after the Edo period, Yokohama quickly grew from a small fishing village into a major city. Its Yamate and Motomachi districts were residential neighbourhoods for the foreign merchants and still have a Western feel. The Foreigners' Cemetery that dates from 1854 is fascinating.
Yokohama Chinatown (Yokohama Chūkagai) is Japan's largest Chinatown, known for its plentiful eating options.
Minato Mirai 21 is Yokohama’s new city centre on the harbour, with lots of entertainment attractions, shopping and dining.
Take a tour of the Kirin Beer Factory and if you’re into noodles, head to the Ramen Museum.
