Remote trails for the self-reliant

Saddle Horse Canyon Overlook

The easy, 1.6-mile roundtrip Saddle Horse Canyon Tail leads to the rim of Saddle Horse Canyon.

The mostly flat Tuckup Trail leads 6.2 miles to Tuckup Canyon with spectacular 1,000-year-old pictographs, has no water and is difficult to follow.

An old jeep trail the first 2 miles makes a good day hike. The extreme Lava Falls Trail to the river drops 2,500 feet in 1.5 miles and is difficult to follow with cairns over loose scree.

Vulcans Throne, at the end of Vulcans Throne spur road, leads about 1,000 feet up a cinder covered path 1.5 miles roundtrip.

The easy, 2.9-mile Esplanade Loop begins at campsite 10 and follows a two-track to the old Tuckup Road then west to the Tuckup trailhead, then south on the main road back.

Obtain accurate trail maps before venturing on the indistinct trails marked by cairns. If lost of injured, only self-rescue is available.
