Phantom Ranch
Canyon bottom comfort
A dorm never looked so good, not because of the setting nestled in cottonwoods at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but because of the price you pay to get there, and I don’t mean dollars. You have to hike, ride a mule, or float the river to reach the historic Phantom Ranch lodge designed by Mary Cloter in 1922.
The 11 cabins with ac/heat and meals come with the price of the overnight mule trip. The package includes lunch on the ride down, dinners, and breakfast the day leaving. If no cabins are available, hikers and rafters get a uni-sex dorm with 10 beds, a bathroom and shower. Breakfast and dinner (sack lunch available) for hikers and ranch guests must be reserved separately. Snacks and sundries are available at the Canteen.
Don’t want to carry your backpack? A Duffelservice (30 lb. limit) by mule costs $75 each way. All accommodations, meals, mule rides, and duffel service, are reserved 15 months in advance by an online lottery, and must be reconfirmed by phone, 928-638-3283, two days in advance. Lottery winners get first choice for rooms, meals, and duffel service. Anything unclaimed can be reserved 13 months in advance at central reservations, 888-297-2757 or 303-297-2757 (outside of the US).
