Makea Tinirau Road

Stroll down Avarua's historic street

For an historical stroll in Avarua, check out the Beachcomber Building (built 1845), then head over the main road to walk straight inland on Makea Tinirau Rd.

You’ll pass the Arutanga CICC Church (built 1853) on the left, the Para O Tane Palace of Makea (built in the 1840s) on the right, then the University of the South Pacific (opened 1979) on the left again.

The road then crosses a small bridge to the headquarters of the Cook Islands Christian Church (formerly London Missionary Society; built 1843). The imposing Takamoa Theological College building is also here.
