Scooter

Great way to get around

The Cook Islands is ‘scooter country’ and this is a popular and great way to get around.

If your home-country license does not specifically permit you to ride a motorbike or scooter in your homeland however, you will need to get a Cook Islands visitor license – for Rarotonga only. It’s still a bit like the Wild West on Aitutaki and the outer islands, where virtually anything goes.

Cook Islands Visitor License

Getting a 30-day Cook Islands Visitor License is an interesting experience in its own right. Apply for at the Rarotonga Police Station in downtown Avarua.

You will need to take a theory test ($10) and a practical test ($10) before you receive your Cook Islands visitor license ($20). So, all up, you’ll be paying $40. If you’re only wanting a scooter for a day or two, it may not be worth it.

Theory Tests are held Mon-Thu 9am; 11am & 1pm, Fri 9am & 11am. Practical Tests are held Mon-Thu 10am & 2pm, Fri 10am & 1pm.
