Car

Lots of rental cars available

There are lots of rental car options - but keep in mind that Rarotonga is only 32km around and Aitutaki is smaller. You could actually walk around Rarotonga in a day. You may not need a rental car for more than a day or two.

Rates will depend on whether you turn up in busy season or not. Expect to pay upwards from $50-60 per day, including insurance; discounts for longer rentals.

If you come from Australia, NZ, US, Canada, UK, Japan or an EU country, you can drive in the Cook Islands using your overseas license. Otherwise, you’ll have to get a Cook Islands Driver’s License.

Advice

No speeding!: there are friendly but active police officers out there. The maximum speed limit permitted in Rarotonga is 50kmph, 30kmph in built-up areas, 20kmph around schools.

There is a concerted anti-”drink driving” campaign in the Cooks. Do not drink and drive. The limit is 250mcg per litre of breath, the same as in New Zealand.
