4G on Rarotonga & Aitutaki

Vodafone Cook Islands is the only company for telecom services in the Cooks. 4G mobile data is available on Rarotonga and Aitutaki, 3G on Mitiaro, Atiu and Mauke.

Options include buying a preloaded 15-Day Travel SIM card, available at the Vodafone outlet at the airport or from stores in Avarua and Muri Beach. These include 5GB data, 30 calling minutes and 300 TXTs to anywhere in the world.

There are over 300 Vodafone WiFi hotspots around Rarotonga and Aitutaki, marked with a red “WiFi Hotspot” sign, as in the image. WiFi Passes can be bought online. These hotspots generally work very well.

Some larger accommodation places will have their own on-site WiFi system for guests.

Infrastructure

Rarotonga and Aitutaki are now linked on the Manatua One Polynesia Fibre Cable, a submarine cable linking Samoa, Niue, the Cook Islands, and French Polynesia. The 3600km cable gives fibre optic cable connectivity and is an extension of the Honotua cable linking Hawaii and Tahiti. Aitutaki is one of the smallest fibre-connected islands in the world.
