Village Bar (Lemon Arbour)

Souse Saturdays (l, d; $)

Barbadians flock from miles around to enjoy pudding and souse here at the casual Village Bar on a Saturday lunchtime, when the place is heaving.

Tucked away in the village of Lemon Arbour – also its alternative name – in St John, its breezy rural location, with pleasant views across a valley, makes a pleasant change from the beach.

Aside from the souse, you can choose from tasty fried pigtails, chicken and fish, with the usual sides, and the cheap drinks ensure that it’s a favourite spot to lime. On Fridays, there’s often pork. The place is quieter midweek, when the choice can be more limited.

The menu’s chalked up by the bar, where you need to order (and pay) then wait at your table, so it pays to get here early to avoid the lines and grab a spot with a view. Beware – the food is heavily spiced, with extra hot pepper sauce available for hard-core enthusiasts.
