Harrison's Cave
A magical world underground
One of Barbados’ top attractions, Harrison’s Cave is the most extensive and spectacular of the cave systems that riddle the coral limestone crust that covers the island.
After a short video, the 40min tour aboard an electric “tram” gives fascinating insights into the country’s geology. Once underground, you pass through illuminated chambers full of beautiful calcitic formations, culminating in the impressive Great Hall. There are photo stops along the way, and a café at the entrance.
Far more atmospheric, however, is the monthly walking tour: experience the cave’s eerie stillness, punctuated only by dripping water.
Signing up for the eco-adventure (pictured above) means donning a hard hat and headlamp, to crawl/wade through less visited watery tunnels in the cave system, as well as exploring the surrounding gully vegetation at the cave mouth.
