Public Transport in Sydney

Sydneys Ferries.

Transport for NSW manages Sydney’s integrated network of buses, ferries, trains (including metro services), and light-rail, with a handy trip planner on its website.

Ferries connect Circular Quay in central Sydney to numerous harbour suburbs and attractions, including Manly and Taronga Zoo.

Buses are handy for reaching the eastern suburbs and beaches (including Bondi and Bronte).

Trains are especially convenient for Kings Cross/Potts Point/Darlinghurst, North Sydney, Newton and Sydney Airport.

Light-rail services are handy for Pyrmont and Surry Hills.

Tickets

To ride, simply tap-on and tap-off using a contactless debit or credit card or linked device. (Note that foreign cards may be charged a transaction fee by the card issuer.)

Alternatively, rechargeable Opal cards are available from many convenience stores and newsagencies. The card is free though you will need to load it with credit (minimum of $10/5 for adult/child, $35 if purchased at airport train stations).

More expensive single tickets (Opal single-trip tickets) are still available from many train, ferry and light-rail stops, as well as on buses.
