Seppeltsfield

Historic Barossa winery

Seppeltsfield Winery

If you visit only one winery in the Barossa Valley (a big mistake!), make it this one. Dating from 1851, it’s an evocative spot, graced with colonial-era stone buildings and manicured gardens.

The winery is especially famous for its Tawny (fortified wine), which has an unbroken lineage of every vintage dating back to 1878. There are numerous tasting and tour options; the Taste Your Birth Year tour lets you sample Tawny from your birth year, straight from the barrel. If sticky-and-sweet isn’t your thing, focus on the big, bold Barossa reds.

Advanced bookings are necessary, including for Seppeltsfield’s outstanding Modern-Australian restaurant Fino.

Transport: Seppeltsfield lies around 70km northeast of Adelaide.

Car: The quickest route from Adelaide is via Main North Rd (A20). That said, consider taking the slightly longer but prettier route through Woodside, Birdwood, Mt Pleasant and Springwood, reached by heading out of Adelaide on the South Eastern Fwy (M1) and taking the Hahndorf/Woodside/Birdwood exit.
