Durness

Turquoise waters & lots of options

Rispond Beach

Strung out along grassy cliffs above a series of stunning white-sand beaches and their gloriously turquoise waters, Durness is an immediately likeable place and a good base, not only for local wanderings but also for trips to Cape Wrath.

Balnakeil Craft Village

The key village sight, Balnakeil Craft Village occupies some abandoned 1950s military buildings which were colonised by artists, craftspeople and bohemians in the 1960s, eventually producing an eclectic mix of craft shops, a bistro and the popular chocolatier Cocoa Mountain.

Deep Time

One Craft Village building is devoted to Durness Deep Time (Daily 10am–5pm; entry by donation), a geology exhibition run by an Icelandic geologist who also leads excellent guided tours of the area (around £30 for 3 hrs).
