Hyères

Resort of the Golden Isles

This resort, just 15km/9.3mi along the coast from Toulon and replete with palm trees which flourish in the very mild climate, has attracted visitors from northern Europe since late Victorian times.

Protected by the Massif des Maures and bordered by the Mediterranean it boasts 300 days sunshine per year. Extensive safe beaches 20km/12.4mi long are one of the reasons for the town's success coupled with its year round appeal.

Nearby, the unusual double isthmus of the Presqu'île de Giens creates a lagoon as it stretches away towards the Ile de Porquerolles. L'Almanarre beach to the west of the Peninsula attracts many surfers and leads to the Route du Sel passing the salt pans of the lagoon and eventually to the Étang des Presquiers which attracts a variety of birds.

The Golden Isles

To the east of the Peninsula is Hyères-Plage from which boats leave for the Îles d'Hyères. Nearby the unusual double isthmus of the Presqu'île de Giens creates a lagoon as it stretches away towards the Île de Porquerolles, Port-Cross Le Levant. Don't miss: the magnifcent view from the ruins of the Château des Aires and Park above the town.
