The Seven Thinkers
Conversation in Nice
Dotted around Place Masséna in the centre of Nice, on each side of the tram lines, you cannot help but notice seven tall poles with what look like opaque white Buddhas perched on them.
These are the work of Catalan artist Jaume Plensa who created this contemporary piece in 2007. The seven polystyrene statues represent ‘thinkers’ from seven continents who communicate with one another, hence the title of the installation. The alternative title for the piece is ‘the Conversation of Nice’
Conversation?
You can’t actually see or hear anything during the day. However, when it’s dark the statues continually glow and change from green to red to pink to blue to orange and back again. Well, you either like it or hate it but you can’t ignore it. Moreover, any artwork which promotes the concept that people should talk to each other has to be a good idea!
