Van Gogh's in Arles & St-Rémy
The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh spent a relatively short part of his career in Arles (1898-1899). However, he remians forever associated with the city due to the sheer volume of his output and of course his stormy relationship with Paul Gauguin.
A starry, starry night and much more
He produced much of his best work during this period and most of his paintings are instantly recognisable. Check out his work here on a video clip set to Don McLean’s “Starry Starry Night”.
When Vincent first moved to Arles he stayed at the Hôtel-Restaurant Carrel before moving into the ‘Yellow House’. His health, which had been poor, began to improve and in October Gauguin came to stay.
However, his bouts of madness returned and he fell out with Gauguin – this is the famous episode where he cut off part of his ear. Vincent was committed to hospital and Gaughin soon left – even his friend Roulin the postman was transferred to Marseille. Finally, he was committed to the asylum at St-Paul-de-Mausole near St-Rémy where he remained until he returned to Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris in May 1889.
