Vaucluse Plateau

High plain drifting

The Vaucluse Plateau is a vast area of limestone with underground drainage known as karst. The terrain is used to raise sheep and grow lavender.

Situated in the Vaucluse département north of the Luberon it rises as a sheer cliff in places especially above Fontaine de Vaucluse which is located in a closed valley or Vallis Clausa (from which the name comes) cut into the Plateau.

Gordes

Gordes

A Plus Beau Village & a beautiful Abbey

It stretches north-east across the Plateau d’Albion up to the Montagne de Lure and north to Mont Ventoux. On the southern escarpment can be found the plus beau village of Gordes. Nearby, a little further to the north, one of the three sisters of Provence, the beautiful Abbaye de Sénanque nestles in a valley. Moreover, high on the Plateau is the old town of Sault around which much of the area’s lavender is grown.
