Daudet’s Mill

Letters from my Windmill

The unremarkable village of Fontvieille near Arles is home to the windmill made famous by the Provençal writer Alphonse Daudet

Letters from his mill

One of his better known and more important works is ‘Letters from my Windmill’ published in 1869. Written in the first person, it tells of a Parisian author’s new life in Provence in which he recounts day to day events in the South in a light-hearted way.

Alphonse Daudet

The windmill, located just outside Fontvieille, makes a splendid sight when lit by the late afternoon sun. Furthermore, there is a cross country trail nearby.

Marcel Pagnol’s film (1954) of Daudet’s work entitled ‘Les Lettres de mon Moulin’ can be bought on DVD (In French).
