Chiclayo Churches

Where Pope Leo XIV was Bishop Pr

Pope Leo XIV gifted his mitre to Chiclayo

Since Chiclayo’s former Bishop Robert Prevost was elected Pope on May 8, 2025, the city has prepared itself to be the new center of Peru’s religious tourism. Local companies like Sipán Tours have trained their guides to take tourists to the four churches with the closest ties to their former bishop.

Before the tour, go to Chiclayo’s cathedral, on the plaza to see where he preached. Next to the cathedral is the town hall, Palacio Municipal, where they have created a small museum about Robert Prevost’s time in Chiclayo.

Message from Bishop Prevost to the congregation

The first stop on the tour is usually El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Paz (this entry’s map location), where Bishop Prevost presided over the ceremony for the nuns who entered the cloisters. He left the congregation a message in the book above just after he was named Bishop.

Other important churches on the route are Parroquia San Juan Obrero, Parroquia de San Pedro, Monsefú and Iglesia Santa María Magdalena, Ciudad Eten.
