Huilloc

Rural Andean culture

Making kintu with coca leaves in Huilloc

Huilloc (also spelled Hilloq) was one of the first villages in the Sacred Valley to welcome tourists for homestays. Many other communities are learning from Hilloc and starting their own tourism projects, but Huilloc still has the best organized programs and most experience with tourism.

If you go to see a ceremony, it will likely be to thank the Pachamama (Mother Earth) with a variety of offerings, including coca leaves. Depending on the time of year, the focus could be on gratitude for a good harvest or for new lambs. The photo below was from a ceremony to show gratitude for the wool they shear from llamas and alpacas.

One advantage to Huilloc having over a decade of experience with tourism is that the community is fully on board. In other villages where tourism is new you can still encounter doubt or resistance among community members, which can feel like hostility from the tourists’ perspective. You won’t have that experience in Huilloc.
