Freelance Guides
In Peru, I highly recommend getting a guide. Guides have done two years of training after university and most are multilingual. Many studied archeology, anthropology, history and other applicable fields before starting guide training. Archeological sites in Peru don’t have self-guided audio tours or plaques that explain what you’re looking at. Few trails are marked, so it’s easy to get lost on a trek - the notable exceptions being the hike from the Pisac plaza up to the ruins and Waqra Pukará.
These are guides I know personally who I recommend based on their experience, knowledge of destinations, and English language skills. Listed below are their names, specialties and contact info. Guides labeled Mapi work at Machu Picchu and those labeled C & SV specialize in day tours to destinations around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Guides labeled Trekking also offer multi-day treks and camping experiences.
