Machu Picchu Mountain

The longest hike

Machu Picchu Mountain extra hike

Machu Picchu Mountain (Montaña) is up behind the main ruins, which are called llaqta. Llaqta means town in Quechua, and is used to distinguish the part of Machu Picchu that has buildings.

You’ll rarely see a photo of Machu Picchu Mountain, though most of the best photos of Machu Picchu llaqta are taken from there. I really enjoy this hike and highly recommend it.

However, it takes at least an hour to hike to the top, which discourages most people. The biggest drawback is that you are required to do Circuit 3 through the ruins, which goes to the fewest sites and is designed to take only an hour and a half.

This is not a good choice for people whose priority is to the see the llaqta.
