Visas for workers

Tourist visa vs. worker visa

Peru Tourist Visa

Peru does not have a visa for digital nomads and there are currently no plans to create one.

Most digital nomads and people on a working holiday don’t need more than the 90-day visa afforded to most nationalities. (Check if your passport qualifies for a 90-day visa on arrival here). The visa for most nationalities from the Americas and Europe can be extended easily for an additional 90 days every year.

If you want to be in Peru for more than 180 days in a calendar year, you need a Peruvian company to sponsor you. This is not an attractive option for most digital nomads, as Peruvian wages are low and a 48-hour work week standard.

However, it is relatively easy for foreigners to open their own business in Peru and employ themselves. Starting a company in Peru requires a current Peruvian citizen or legal resident with a “carnet de extranjería” to sign on as manager when the company is founded.

If you are good at legalese in Spanish, you may be able to do this on your own. I highly recommend hiring a lawyer if you want to go this route. Get to know the expat community and ask for recommendations on reliable lawyers as they can be difficult to find.
