Inti Punku

Up from Ollantaytambo (6hrs)

Inti Punku from Ollantaytambo

Compared to Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake, this is a much shorter drive from Cusco and a much longer hike. It takes 3-4hrs to hike up, depending on how acclimated you are, and about 2hrs back down. If you hike in the dry season, or early in the morning, you’ll likely see Mt. Veronica framed in the doorway.

Most people do this as a day hike but you can take a tent to camp out and be at the Inti Punku (which means Sun Gate in Quechua) when the sun rises. The campground is just below the ridge near the quarry. Note that there are no streams, so you have to bring all your own water.

Not many agencies offer this as a day hike, but if you are good with maps, just check out the hiking directions on my Inti Punku blog.

Note: There is also an Inti Punku on the Inca Trail; where you get your first view of Machu Picchu as you hike the Inca Trail.
