Taquile Island

Where real men knit

Taquile from Amantani

Taquile is a UNESCO World Heritage site and even more touristy than Amantaní. Like Amantaní, it does not have any commercial hotels but has a well developed homestay program.

Taquile’s culture is famous for the men’s prowess as knitters. Traditionally, a man’s desirability as a partner is partly judged on how well he can knit, as explained in this BBC Travel article about Taquile.

Transport

The easiest, but longest way to get to Taquile is from Puno. I recommend paying for transportation with one of the tour agencies, but then arranging your own lodging. It is a shorter trip from Capachica (via Juliaca) to Taquile, but there are fewer boats.
