Château Hill
Colline du Chateau at Nice
Nowadays Château Hill provides a pleasant cool park to walk through on its 92m/302ft plateau above Vieux Nice and the Bassin Lympia.
A varied past
This famous hill was originally occupied by the Celtic Ligurians. Next it became a trading post of the Greeks who were followed inevitably by the Romans. In the Middle Ages it became a town with a Cathedral (only the foundations now exist) and a Château. Ultimately, the castle was pulled down in 1706 on the orders of King Louis XIV.
The multi-tiered park was laid out in the 19th century complete with a magnificent waterfall. A little further on you’ll find a welcoming café. Walking around the park at the top you will come across ancient foundations from the Greek and Roman periods. Moreover, you’ll discover some stunning mosaics in the Greek style.
Incredible Views
However, the main reason for climbing the steps to the top is to enjoy the amazing views. You’ll see Bassin Lympia and Mont Boron to the east and Vieux Nice with the Promenade des Anglais and the Baie des Anges stretching away to the west.
