Ste-Jeanne-d’Arc

The Art Deco Church of St Joan of Arc in Nice

Located on rue Charles Peguy in the north of the city lies the stunning concrete Art Deco structure of Ste-Jeanne-d’Arc built by architect Jacques Droz in the early 1930s. Declared a historical monument in 1992, this structure is well worth a detour to see.

Approaching the church, it will not surprise you to know that the building gets its fair share of criticism. Due to its unconventional design incorporating a 65m high bell-tower wrapped in flames plus nine ellipsoidal domes and porch. Some Niçois even call it ‘the Meringue’ due to its resemblance to a certain culinary creation!

Nevertheless, the overall appearance is very striking and forms a sharp contrast with the City’s Baroque religious buildings. The interior is no less amazing. Its high pillars and vaults are complemented by huge cubist inspired frescoes of the stations of the Cross by Eugène Klementieff.
