TranzAlpine Scenic Train

Cross the Southern Alps by train

804, the retun TranzAlpine

While most passengers are on a return daytrip from Christchurch to Greymouth and back, it’s a great option to take this scenic train one-way and either begin or end your West Coast odyssey in Greymouth. A slew of rental car companies have offices here, so you can either pick up or return in Greymouth, although one-way fees may come into play.

The one-way train journey covers 223km and takes a little under five hours. It leaves Christchurch at 8.15am, arriving in Greymouth at 1.05pm. The return journey departs at 2.05pm, arriving in Christchurch at 6.30pm. Check departure dates carefully as schedule’s are subject to occassional changes.

Greymouth Station is abuzz from midday until about 2.30pm on train days.
