Greymouth

greymouth station

The West Coast’s version of the ‘Big Smoke’, the joke goes that it’s easy to tell how, on a bad-weather day, that Greymouth (pop 13,500) got it’s name.

At the mouth of the Grey River, this is the biggest town on the coast and a fair bit of the fun is based on getting here.

If you’ve got your own wheels, Greymouth is linked to Christchurch by SH73 over Arthur’s Pass (245km), and by SH6 & 7 to Nelson (282km). Heading south it’s 455km on SH6 over Haast Pass to Wanaka.

Many come to Greymouth on the TranzAlpine scenic train from Christchurch, get a rental vehicle and head out on their voyage of exploration.
