Te Anau to Milford Road

road

The 118km road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is a highlight of any visit to New Zealand. Self-driving is the way to go, but you’ll also learn a lot taking a guided day tour from Te Anau.

The road was completed in 1953 - until then, visitors to Milford Sound either walked there on the Milford Track or arrived by boat. Sealing of the road wasn’t finished until the mid-1990s. Allow a minimum of 2 hours between Te Anau and Milford, but with all the interesting spots to stop, you’d be better to allow 4-5 hours, at least in one direction.

Make sure to have a full tank of fuel when you leave Te Anau. That’s the last gas station you’ll see until you get back. Also, there are no shops and meagre facilities out at Milford.
