Larnach Castle

Lord it in this hilltop mansion

Larnach Castle Gardens

Looking a tad out of place atop Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle was built in 1871 by Dunedin banker and Member of Parliament William Larnach to impress his wife.

While the building and its furnishings are spectacular, it didn’t bring Larnach much happiness: his first two wives died and he ended up shooting himself.

In 2021, Larnach Castle hit screens worldwide in Netflix’s “The Royal Treatment”. Check out the castle in the official trailer.

Stay the night, stroll the grounds, have High Tea (2-3pm daily with a pre-booking) or dine in the Ballroom Cafe.
