Medical care & pharmacies

Excellent but expensive

Health and Safety

Medical care in the United States is excellent — but also among the most expensive in the world.

Insurance

Even a short trip to an urgent care clinic or a visit to an emergency room can result in significant costs.

For that reason, all travellers to New England should carry a comprehensive travel health insurance that covers emergency treatment, hospital stays, ambulance transport, and medical evacuation if necessary. Make sure your policy includes coverage for any pre-existing conditions and that it covers sports and adventure activities if you plan to do any. Keep a digital or printed copy of your insurance information with you at all times.

Urgent Care Clinics

Most towns and cities have urgent care clinics that can treat non-emergencies (sprains, infections, minor injuries) without an appointment, often for less than a hospital visit. In an emergency, dial 911.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens are widespread and can advise on over-the-counter medications. Some larger locations also offer basic walk-in clinic services.
