Walden Pond

Thoreau was here

North side of Walden Pond, near the spot where Henry David Thoreau lived in the woods to prove that elaborate housing was not necessary.

Henry David Thoreau decided to spend two years semi-hermited on his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson’s property near Walden Pond, contemplating life.

His imperfect experiment in self-reliant, isolated living getting food from mom and visits from friends still inspires in its message to pare back the unnecessary and suck the marrow from the bones of life.

Today, visitors walk the tral around the clear, glacial kettle pond, visit a replica of his cabin, or swim from the sandy shores.

The peaceful spot allows slow communion with nature, a must-see for the thoughtful.
