Mt. Washington

Go big or go home

Mt. Washington Hiker

Mt. Washington has stunning panoramic views. At nearly 4200 feet, it’s the highest peak in the North East and pretty windy, holding the world record windspeed of 231 mph in 1934-1996. Hang on to your hat!

Weather at the top can be very different from weather at the bottom and fog is persistent. The Abenaki people considered mountain tops the dwelling of the gods, and so never went.

The summit now has a museum, gift shop, observation area, cafeteria, and the Mount Washington Observatory.

Mt Washington

Today, people routinely summit. The only question is how?

Driving

The short way is to take your car up the Mt. Washington Auto Road, a 30 minute drive up to the summit. The Auto Road is America’s oldest man-made tourist attraction, first opened in 1861. A snow coach takes riders up in the winter.
