Baxter State Park
Here there be moose
Governor Percival P. Baxter used his own money to create Baxter State Park with the promise to put wilderness first and recreation second. Hikers and campers are expected to uphold these principles. There is no electricity, running water, or paved roads within the park boundary.
Hikes
A key draw of the park is Mt. Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The Native American Penobscot tribe consider the mountain to be inhabited by the thunder god Pamola.
One might need to get on good terms with Pamola since Katahdin is a strenuous 8-12 hour round trip with an elevation gain of 4000 feet.
Those who want a less difficult and shorter hike (2-4 hours) might try Horse Mountain, Chimney Pond, or Cranberry Pond hikes instead.
