Museé d’Art Contemporain
Local & historic contemporary art
Note: the Museum of Contemporary Art is in the process of completing renovation work for reopening in 2028, so there are no exhibitions though its activities program is ongoing.
Montreal's Museum of Contemporary Art (Museé d’Art Contemporain) – Canada's first such museum to open in 1939 – can boast of owning some 6000 paintings as well as an impressive stock of sculpture, photography, video and installation art and also attracts the multimedia performance.
Understandably a good portion of the collection is rotated, so it's always worth a look for real contemporary art fans. On the other hand, if you only have a passing interest or time for only one such museum, then pick the better Montreal Museum of Fine Arts instead.
