Xochimilco Canals

Gondola rides along ancient waterways

Xochimilco. 2016.

For the quintessential Mexico City experience, head for the Xochimilco canals to cruise along ancient waterways flanked by verdant gardens known as chinampas.

There are about a dozen trajinera (gondola) docks, including Embarcadero Cuemanco, which provides excellent bird-watching opportunities and is a bit quieter than the ones in Xochimilco Centro.

It’s also the best point of departure to visit Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls), a creepy island with hundreds of eerie dolls hanging from clothes lines and trees.

Along the canals, food vendors and musicians will approach your boat offering up food, drinks and song. Xochimilco is best reached by car or taxi.
