ATMs & Banks

ATMs are everywhere

ATMs in Japan show you the money-dispensing mechanism!

Despite increasing use of credit cards, Japan is still very much a cash-based society, so it pays to have some cash at hand.

It's worth noting that ATMs often charge for withdrawals and that not all ATMs are open 24 hours - and not all ATMs will accept international cards. Check JNTO for info on ATMs that do. There are ATMs at all the major airports.

You can exchange money at banks, but it can be time-consuming and most banks close at 3pm.

You’ll also find foreign exchange shops in major cities that are frequented by foreign visitors.
