Somewhat surprisingly, Japan is still a cash-based society, though credit, debit and prepaid cards of international brands are generally accepted throughout the country.

Don’t expect this to be the case everywhere though, especially in mountainous, small island or remote areas. Make sure to have some cash on hand.
