Gion Matsuri 祇園祭

Procession of floats in Kyōto (17 Jul)

Gion Matsuri lanterns

While Kyōto’s Gion Matsuri takes place over the entire month of July, the highlight is the grand procession of floats (Yamaboko Junko) on the 17th. A second procession also takes place on 24 July.

The floats are huge, up to 25m in height, weighing up to 12 tons, and are pulled on wheels as big as people.

There are plenty of other interesting activities over the month though - check for details at Gion Matsuri.

Expect accommodation in Kyōto to be at a premium.
