Sumō

A special highlight for any visitor to Japan who loves sports is to go to watch Sumō. Professional tournaments take place six times a year for 15 days each in January, May and September at Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tōkyō, March in Osaka, July in Nagoya and December in Fukuoka.

The Japan Sumō Association has an English-language website that provides details of upcoming bashō (tournaments) and information on how to purchase tickets.

Martial Arts

A number of Japanese martial arts have developed into competitive sports and establised strong followings around the world.

Judō, in particular, is an Olympic sport and practiced worldwide. Foreign judō practitioners often turn up to train at Tōkyō’s Kōdōkan, the headquarters of the worldwide judō community.
