Hitchhiking

hitchiking in japan

I first hitchhiked around Japan in the 1980s and it was a breeze - Will Ferguson published his legendary The Hitchhiker's Guide to Japan in 1998 - and I still believe that this is a great way to get out and see ‘the real Japan’, meet locals, and glimpse a side of this fascinating country that few foreign visitors get to see.

That said, just like everywhere else, Japan has its fair share of weirdos and perverts, so hitchhiking here is not for everyone.

Study up on Hitchhiking in Japan, try to imbibe some basic Japanese, take along a good dose of common sense, and head out and hit the road for a unique visit to Japan!
