Trains
Super-efficient network
Japan has an enviably efficient rail network. Trains whip around cities and the country as a whole with clockwork precision, of which the Japanese are extremely proud.
Highly recommended: Consider getting a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) for virtually unlimited using of trains for 7, 14 or 21 days. Although the price of these passes has risen in recent years, they are still an incredible bargain if you make the most of them.

Riding a shinkansen (bullet train) is a highlight of any trip to Japan.
Reminder: Once you’ve got your ticket and put it into the machine to go to your train platform, don’t lose it! - you’ll need it to get out at the other end.
