Great for exploring Japan

Rental Car

Renting a car is a great option if you want to explore off the beaten path, rural or mountainous areas and is relatively easy with English-speaking GPS navigation systems.

You’ll need an International Driving Permit and be mentally prepared to drive on the left-hand side of the road.

For the full scoop, check out:

Expressways has info on Japan’s 10,000km of kōsokudōro, toll costs, ETC cards, and a variety of Expressway Passes that are available to foreign visitors.

If you’re after a rental motorbike adventure in Japan, check out Rental 819. Hokkaidō, in particular, is great for bike touring, with Rider Houses set up to accommodate bikers.

Don’t forget:

  • speed limits tend to be low
  • stop signs are inverted red triangles
  • Japan is very tough on drunk driving (don’t do it!).
