Capsule Hotels カプセルホテル

A true Japanese space-saving cultural experience

Capsule hotel

Capsule hotels initially targeted Japanese businessmen needing cheap accommodation near major train stations in big cities. The emphasis was on cheap rather than comfortable.

With intense interest from international media, these days, foreign visitors looking for a unique Japanese experience, often opt for a night in a capsule hotel - a ‘room’ built around a single size futon mattress - about 1.2m in width, 2m in length and 1m in height.

Toilets and showers are shared, but expect power outlets and free wi-fi in the capsules, plus all sorts of facilities outside such as restaurants, vending machines, laundry facilities and lounges.

Of late, some places have gone super-cool. Check out Booking.com’s amazing list of Capsule Hotels in Tōkyō options.

Expect to pay between ¥3000 and ¥4000 per capsule per night.
