Geisha & Maikoya

Experience geisha culture in Gion

Geishas

Geisha (or geiko) are professional entertainers who attend to guests during meals, banquets and other occasions. Trained in various traditional Japanese arts, such as dance and music, their role is to make guests feel at ease with conversation, drinking games and dance performances.

If you want a to learn more, Maikoya is a Gion teahouse that holds geisha shows, geisha tea ceremony and a geisha dinner show daily.

They also have a Geisha & Tea Ceremony Museum and run Gion Geisha walking tours.

It’s a tad touristy, but if you have no Japanese language skills, this is your best way to learn more.
