History, Castles & Museums

Matsumoto Castle

Here’s an overview of Japan’s long and complicated history. Studying this will go a long way to helping to understand the ‘uniqueness’ of Japan.

Of particular interest: from 1639 to 1853, Japan was virtually totally isolated from the rest of the world (see Edo period). During this time of sakoku, Japan developed a ‘unique’ culture, unlike any other in the world.
